Stop Relying On Music

Spread the love

It’s kind of funny.

We’re programmed to want music in the background for everything.

Every single college roommate I had would blast music as they took a shower.

Walkthrough a library or coffee shop and almost everyone that’s working has their headphones in.

And if you go to the gym without headphones, people think you’re a psychopath. I actually got asked once why I didn’t have headphones in at the gym.

Even as I’m writing this blog post in Starbucks right now, I’ve got my AirPods in.

So don’t get me wrong. I’ve got nothing against utilizing some tunes to boost your productivity.

Here’s where the problem starts…
We become so reliant on music, that when we can’t use it for one reason or another, we feel like we can’t perform.

And there are so many other examples of other things like this:

Needing alcohol to feel social
Needing coffee in order to be in a good mood in the morning
Needing our workspace perfectly organized before starting work
Anytime we become dependent on something in order to execute, we need to take a step back.
Now back to the whole music problem.

Here’s what I’ve started doing recently…
I take a day off of music each week.

I do a day with no music for my work time. And then I also do a day with no music for my workout in the gym.

There’s no need to eliminate music entirely.

But once or twice a week is enough to keep me not reliant on it.

Sometimes it’s nice to just let my “inner beast” out.

Do you think our ancestors threw on their headphones and got pumped up before they went into battle?
Just something to think about.

Do you feel like you’ve become too reliant on music? Or perhaps there’s something else that you’ve become a little too dependent on?

Thank you for your time reading this! Stay tuned for more   I’ll be posting daily (or close to it) with helpful insights on productivity, business, and life.
